Interview with Ivonne Torres

The Besukonas collections it is a series of paintings that were created from fun loving people.
Besukonas means love, affection, joy, warmth, and is all about the lips! My message is “One kiss can change the world”!
When I create a painting for the Besukonas I begin with the idea of vibrant colors, textured hair and eyes that can see right through you. The textures show the depth and countless hours that go into creating the Beskonas Collection.
The textures are a blend of materials that range from acrylic paint, charcoal, and many other mediums. There are always challenges in creating the next series of Besukonas because I want to keep them funky and original.
I see creativity and art through people, the reflective nature of how people interact with each other help me to be inspired to create such warm pieces.

Contemporary Art Station: Tell us about how you got started. When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I started as an Interior Designer which was a great basis for my interest in art. I began to learn different types of techniques and drawings skills during while I was a designer. I started to get very interested in Art when I moved to New York in 2001. I studied some mixed media techniques during my time there and after few years I move to Miami. This is when I really started to paint on a daily basis, I would (and still do) paint big formats on canvas. I have now been painting for almost two decades, and I have not lost my desire to paint, on the contrary I look forward to it. I really believe that this is my mission in life encompassing passion, love, and discipline all on one frontier.
CAS: What is your process like, from initial idea to the creation of the piece? Do you usually develop the idea for a project before you find the "canvas", or vice versa?
I have different collections, figurative and abstract. My figurative-art pop Collection is named Besukonas Collection. The process to start creating is very specific and detailed, I select everything before I start painting, beginning with the color scheme, textures, techniques and the format as well. On the other hand my Abstract paintings are much more spontaneous, expressionists and it goes with the emotions of the moment like telling a story. I just let go and allow the intuitive side of my artwork reel and some amazing forces take over the canvas
CAS: What do you love most about your creative process?
I love it all! I love when I want to send a message, like in the Besukonas Collection: “A kiss can change the world” I like the element of surprise of creating art and letting go and trust my intuition without judgement. I love the feeling of being, I want the feeling freedom of expression trough colors and textures, which I get and enjoy to the fullest.

CAS: What role does art and the artist play in the broader social conversation today?
I believe the Artist creates today’s social conversation by bringing different types of art to all generations. A message is built in every piece of art, and every artist decides how to send that message, whether it spelt out in words or in a subtle message within their works. Either way the message defines society in many ways, and artist deliver the message in the greatest format every designed, themselves.
CAS: Name a few of your favourite artists and influences.
Some of my favorite and influential Artists are Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Mark Rothko, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, just to name a few.
CAS: What is the best advice you received as an artist?
Never take your art or gift for granted. Practice and master your craft to become the best artist you can be. Keep learning new techniques, and never stop loving what you do.

CAS: When did you discover your voice as an artist?
I can’t remember the exact moment, but I have had the inspiration for as long as l can remember. It is inside of you without limits and it appears and leads you to the path chosen for you.
CAS: What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to find their own?
The only advise that I can give are the ones I received years ago from other magnificent people. Stay balanced, keep focused on your goals, never give up, believe in yourself, and most important stay patient. Love what you do and believe in yourself. =)
Thank you Ivonne!
