DAYANA SHARON MARCONI | Italy

Born in Italy and based in Rome, Dayana Sharon Marconi is a Associate Member of the RPS and AOP. Graduated with Distinction as MA Photography student from Falmouth University, she created the project “I can hear you now”, working across UK, Italy and USA. In her work, she explores the ways in which photography can be used as a tool for social and psychological research, investigating the inner world of the portrayed individuals and viewers. Particularly interested in the process of releasing negative emotions commonly kept as a secret in our daily lives, as a sufferer of anxiety disorders, she often felt the urge to scream out in pain but this inner pressure is never expressed.

Our lives are managed by social norms that stigmatise this act and her aim was to create a constructive dialogue around mental health issues, still considered taboo. The structure of her project is multifaceted to respond to viewers’ different approaches. The use of long-exposure allowed her to depict those moments of emotional liberation capturing facial expressions and body movements at the same time, proving that individuality and diversity have an important role also in the way people suffer. Inspired by the work done by Dr Paul Ekman, these images are also born to ask viewers to actively participate, avoiding a voyeuristic approach, exploring themselves while observing “the other”.

More broadly, she is interested in representing individuality and her personal perception of the world, which is complex and this is why she decided not to use still images only, but also moving image and music score, collaborating with different artists and professionals. Photography and video-art became a mean of self-expression.

Currently focusing on moving image and Performance art, while working with the photographic image, her short documentary “[ɪˈmaː.ɡoː]”, has been selected to screen online during London Lift-Off Festival 2018, as semi-finalist at “$2 Film Festival” in NY and awarded at the Los Angeles “Global Music Award” for the categories “Soundtrack collection” and “Composition/Composer” with a Bronze Medal. “I can hear you now” has been exhibited at the Brick Lane Gallery in London, at Fuoriluogo Art and Culture Residence in Asti, Italy and included into Shutter Hub Open exhibitions in London and Amsterdam. Photographs from the project will be included into the publication “100 Artists of the Future” curated by Contemporary Art Curator Magazine and it will be featured on Untitled Collective Magazine in 2019.

“The whole project is a sophisticated assemblage of images and sounds/music that takes away the fear of the illness. It generates a profound empathy with the subject/s on screen. The film and the photos with the music, sounds and melodies, are sophisticated and at the same time an understandable representation of the pain, of the unease, of the obsession. Huge talent capable of reading her own feelings, capable of dissecting them diligently with love and compassion in order to Load Explode Be Free.”
